The United Arab
of Emirates participates with the worlds celebrations marking the World Day for
Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on the 21st of May,
and according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Development –UNESCO-, this occasion provides an opportunity for mobilization of
all relevant authorities -governments, policy makers, civil society
organizations, local communities, cultural professionals- to promote culture in
its diversity and in all its forms including: the tangible and intangible
heritage, creative cultural industries, cultural goods and services, in
addition to understanding the value of cultural diversity of languages.
The international
cultural community seeks to provide the methods and foundations that facilitate
the use of the cultural wealth in the best possible way, so that the sustainable
Government relies primarily on cultural diversity, taking into consideration
that economic and social development cannot be achieved except through the
respect for and appreciation of cultures, and from this stand point the wise
leadership of the UAE attaches great importance to higher education despite the
educational process being recent compared to other Arab countries, but what distinguishes
this process is the accelerated pace this sector is witnessing year after year , although the higher
education sector in the State is considered the most versatile and developed at
the Arab level. In line with the strategy of the State, and believing in the importance
of convergence of cultural intermingling of peoples, the Ministry of Higher
Education and Scientific Research started the policy of scholarships by
associating them with the needs of the labor market, with a focus on rare scientific
specialties, as the number of scholar students between the years 2000-2013 reached
7500 students.
A number of
studies have confirmed that children’s exposure to multiple cultures and at an
early age would have a positive and significant effect on them, in addition to
promoting their overall growth when being exposed at an early age to a second
language, the UAE is considered a home to more than 150 nationalities, where
the Emirati cultural scene was capable in the past years to combine between
both Arabic and international cultures, while making use of foreign cultures
and the congregation of civilizations in the State .
There are many activities in support of culture,
writers and authors in UAE, for example, the Sheikh Zayed International Prize
For the Book has organized an extensive cultural program during the Abu Dhabi
International Book Fair that took place
from the thirtieth of April until the fifth of May 2014 at the Abu Dhabi
National Exhibition Centre, this year the Fair’s guest of honor was Sweden, while the Arab poet Al Mutanabbi
was the focus personality, in addition the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival
was organized between the 15th -
25th of April 2014, while planning is under way for holding the Sharjah International Book Fair
in November (2014), where Sharjah was chosen as the Islamic Culture Capital
2014 within the Islamic culture capitals
