The Ministry of Education concluded today the events of the Ministry of Education launched by the Emirates Read Team in the Ministry's premises, in conjunction with the National Month of Reading. The said events included a series of sessions and workshops, with the attendance of staff and school students, in addition to hosting authors and writers who share their interest in reading and presenting carefully-selected literary aspects and works which role is to publish and spread the culture of reading among employees and school community, thus promoting the values of love of homeland and preserve its gains.
On his side, HE Marwan Al-Sawaleh, Undersecretary for Academic Affairs for Public Education, explained that the Ministry of Education has devoted a large part of its plans to establish a culture of reading among the students and to make it a lifestyle, launching many innovative initiatives in this field. This is in light of the great role of reading in opening up students' perceptions and improving their academic level.
His Excellence has pointed out that that the directives of the wise leadership on the establishment of reading among students has formed a work compass for the Ministry's teams, where the Ministry has implemented several initiatives that targeted students and the educational field, especially with the beginning of the National Month of Reading, in which the Ministry has carried out more than 450 special reading activities.
Sharifa Mousa, Director of Reading Initiatives at the Ministry has confirmed that the said events included a book fair in which a group of national publishing houses has participated, displaying the most famous publications specialized in the fields of human development, self-development, strategic planning and future anticipation, pointing out to hosting global writers to narrate stories and present them interactively for school students and teachers; including writer Ralph Browning, who told the story of the Dubai talking towers, in addition to focus on highlighting the popular story (folklore) through "Yedo Lamp" event, which aims to introduce the children to their heritage and restore an authentic social custom in Emirati society; that the tales of grandparents.
Mousa pointed to the establishment of the effectiveness of the cultural meeting on the sidelines of the exhibition during which the Ministry hosted group of UAE writers who reviewed their experiences and works with the participation of a group of educational staff and school students, in addition to the establishment of a poetic morning with the participation of Emirati poets Mohammed Al-Mashakhi and Abeer Al-Darmaki in the Ministry of Education theatre.
The Ministry of Education has launched 450 activities and workshops at the Ministry and schools' level during the month of March, including the Language Forum, which consisted of presenting and discussing reading strategies in English and Arabic languages, through holding workshops and introducing presentations.
The activities also included "Wamadat men Hekma" Flashes of Wisdom, which is an initiative that focuses on reading among the Ministry's staff, undertaking a questionnaire on the initiatives to identify employees' attitudes and their intellectual needs, as well as the English spelling competition, which consists of competitions that aim to help students enhance their English language skills and encourage them to excel in spelling skills, in addition to instilling students' spirit of competition.
The Ministry has also included the concept of reading in the operational plan in schools under the slogan of "Reading is Leadership", for all school stages, where schools develop plans to activate the activity of reading according to certain criteria to achieve the best results and access the largest number of free reading hours daily, through dedicating 20 minutes per day for reading. This is in addition to adding a motivational event consisting of a series of competitive competitions between educational institutions, staff and students, including the excellent school in reading and excellent family in promoting the habit of reading, in addition to Reading Marathon, Reading Radar and studenta' debates.
