U.A.E. celebrates
World Tourism day, which falls on Friday (27/9/2013) under the theme “Tourism
and Water: Protecting our Common Future” in line with the 2013 United Nations International Year of Water
Cooperation.
According to “The
Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013", issued by the
"World Economic Forum" UAE ranked number (28) globally and the first
Middle East as the most advanced State in tourism and aviation. In response to this development and as a
vital sector in support of the diversity of the non-oil economy, and to meet
the need of national cadres Dr. "Ahmed Al Sari" head of "History
and Archaeology Department", Professor of Islamic history and Islamic
civilization in the “Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences” at the “UAE University”
said that the university’s senior management, led by His Excellency Sheikh
Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research,
seeks within the academic directions of
translating the great attention paid by the concerned authorities in the State to
the tourism sector, like other sectors, to launch of the "Department of
Tourism Studies”, with the aim of providing qualified personnel in this field,
and training them to monitor and detect touristic elements in the surrounding
environment, and to increase its visibility through marketing and publicity.
The College is preparing to graduate its first class of students who hold
Bachelor of Tourism Studies during the first semester of the current academic
year. And is currently coordinating with
a number of stakeholders for the implementation of a program of practical
training for the students.
The number of female
students in “Tourism Studies Department” in the College started with (10) female
students only with the opening of section three years ago and increased to (89)
female students during the current semester, with the great interaction with
this new specialization by female citizens, which prompted the College to the
launching of a new tourism subspecialty to accommodate the greater number of
students interested in this field.
The Director General
of “National Council for Tourism and Antiquities”, “Mohammed Khamis Al Muhairi”
predicted that the number of hotel guests in the State to reach (15.4) million
during the current year, with an increase of (10%) from 2012. Al Muhairi also said
that “the UAE in recent years has become a tourist destination in the region,
along with Turkey, as it provides a distinct touristic product, as well as the
availability of safe and high-quality infrastructure."
The tourism sector
is estimated at a trillion dollars today, including the movement of more than one
billion tourists a year around the world, and another five to six billion
locally.
