The Arabian Gulf University organized on Tuesday 26th of February 2015, the seventh scientific seminar of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for, on climate change issues entitled "Climate Change: the road from Lima to Paris 2015", with the participation of a Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, and the Supreme Council for Environment, United Nations Environment Program, the United Nations Development Program, and the French Embassy in Bahrain, within part of the University's efforts to examine and address the strategic issues of Arab Gulf society and which the subject of climate change is one of the most recent and most important issues. The seminar, with the participation of selected researchers and international and regional experts in climate change and Chief negotiator for countries, in addition to an expert from the Secretariat of the Convention, aims to inform the scientific community and decision makers at the national level and progress of the negotiations process and controversial issues in the draft of the new agreement, in addition to how to prepare a target plan contributions at the national level. Dr. Khalid Bin Abdul Rahman Al Ohaly, President of the University, said that the Arabian Gulf University was based on joint Gulf work to be a leading academic institution in its contributions to the service of their communities, and thus the University is proud that it hosts the Sheikh Zayed Chair for ecological sciences management initiated by the Abu Dhabi Government that was founded in 1999. The academic chair aims at building capacity in the Gulf in environmental science and since its inception has had notable contributions in education, research and community service in the areas of environmental science of the Gulf, notably the creation of a graduate program in environmental management in the Arabian Gulf University. The seminar reviewed the results of the Lima Conference and the Geneva negotiations in the context of the celebration of 35 years since the Foundation, it has also discussed possible measures in preparation for a list of targeted contributions at the national level, participants also learned about the Arab countries positions on certain issues relating to the new climate agreement negotiations, with case studies to assess vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Arab countries and reviewed the most important potential effects of the new agreement on the Arab countries. The seminar was accompanied by workshops that discussed the scientific basis for the climate change issue and the plan of action of Lima, the progress of negotiations, the possible adaptation and mitigation measures, funding issues and capacity-building.
