Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said that the Ministry of Education has formulated a general framework to ensure the activation of the national month of reading through the launch of a Reading Carnival in the Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah with the participation of schools, kindergartens, community institutions, Ministry of Education leaders and prominent community figures as well as several entities and institutions.
Cultural Activity
He stressed that the national month of reading reflects a state of effective cultural and educational activity at the national level. It invites all community sectors and civil society and private institutions to make reading a way of life, thus contributing to stimulating youth to read and consider reading a means to knowledge.
His Excellency said that the Ministry of Education is working to consolidate reading to become a way of life in the school community and to foster the supporting concepts that strengthen the student's relationship to reading. He pointed out that reading paves the way for the student towards continuous learning and revives its knowledge and ways of attaining it. This adds more life skills that bring balance to his personality and develop his desire for development and self-learning.
Commenting on the steps taken by the Ministry of Education to instill the reading habit among the students, His Excellency stressed that the ministry was keen in the process of developing its curriculum, specifically the Arabic language, on building the material in a way that ensures the students' honing of reading skills by focusing on systematic and supporting readings as well as dedicating a separate reading book in order to make reading a daily habit and pay attention to research and technology.
In addition to activating the role of the library and resource rooms in the development of conversation and self and directed reading skills, as well as enabling the student to reproduce knowledge. The texts also were diverse and focused on sustainable development, and concepts of leadership and innovation, citizenship and belonging, reading, concepts of tolerance, self-esteem and respecting others.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Education's interest in reading stems from the national guidelines, and the keenness of the wise leadership to enrich the linguistic and cognitive aspects of the society and the student.
Events
The Ministry of Education has also been keen to prepare 20 different activities for the month of reading, including the reading days of the Ministry, and reading sessions carried out at the headquarters of the Ministry in the presence of staff, school students, as well as hosting authors and writers to share with students their reading interests and showcasing selected works of literature. Events also include the participation of leaders of the Ministry of Education in the implementation of reading sessions for students every Monday and Thursday weekly.
Marwan Al Sawaleh, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Academic Affairs, said that the ministry has adopted a plan to achieve the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to raise the expectations of the percentage of participation in the Arabic Reading Challenge of and achieving high figures. This inspired us at the Ministry to put His Highness's directives into practice and to draw the outline to start and work effectively.
