New Initiative Helps
Students Make Informed Education and Career Choices
Dubai June 28, 2016- His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul, Minister of
State for Higher Education, today launched the Shorik initiative, an
interactive online platform that connects high school students interested in
studying abroad with students currently studying at international universities.
“Embarking on a
university education, especially overseas, can be a stimulating but also
daunting experience. Shorik aims to make the process a little easier by
providing high school students with the support they need to make informed
choices about academic disciplines and professional opportunities,” stated His
Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul.
The objective of Shorik, which means ‘to
advise’ in Arabic, is to provide aspiring scholarship students with the tools
and resources to navigate the important decisions associated with pursuing
university studies in a new country. The platform features profiles of current
scholarship students, information about recommended majors and background on international
universities. It also offers direct communication channels for high school students
to seek advice from university students studying abroad.
This initiative is part of the Ministry of
Education’s ongoing efforts to provide counseling and academic guidance to high
school graduates, helping them determine which university majors align with
their interests as well as the needs of the UAE economy.
“The Ministry of
Education is committed to ensuring that the higher education experience helps prepare
students for successful careers in both the public and private sectors. A key
component of this goal is linking higher education with the requirements of the
labor market as well as the UAE’s economic aspirations. Through Shorik, we are
encouraging high school students to start thinking about their career earlier
so that they can make the most of their college experience,” H.E. added.
As part of the
launch of the Shorik initiative, a number of student ambassadors, who were
selected for their academic excellence, were
also announced by His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul.
H.E. noted, “The Shorik Ambassador program is
open to all interested scholarship students. Your active contribution is critical
to the success of this initiative and ensuring that our high school graduates
have the guidance they need during this important phase of their academic
journey,” H.E. added.
