The “World Green
Economy Summit (WGES) 2014” was launched on Tuesday (15/4/2014), under the
patronage of his Highness Sheikh “Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum”, Vice
President, Prime Minister, Ruler of “Dubai”, under the theme: “Global
Partnerships, Sustainable Future”. It is the first green summit in the “Middle
East” and “North Africa” region, which sheds light on the various practices of suitability,
products, and sustainable services, in consistence with his Highness’s vision
on building a green economy for sustainable development in the UAE.
The summit will
address several topics in its
sessions, including: “Success in Green Public Private Partnerships”, “Smart Cities
- Smart Infrastructure”, and “The Road to Paris 2015”, in addition to public
sessions under the title: “Private Financing for the Green Economy”, and “The Youth
and Green Innovation”, while the closing session is under the title: “Dubai in
2020, and creating the Green Economy Market Place”.
The summit was attended
by representatives of (50) countries and (45) keynote speakers, and is
considered a major platform that brings together governments and non-government
organizations, and the business and funding community, in order to find
applicable green solutions which lead to the transition into a global green
economy, and this gathering is held in response to the recommendations of the
“1st Global Partnership for Action on Green Economy”, which was held
in March (2014), and focused on the need to outpace the rising pressures and
environmental problems, accelerating the transition to a green economy, and the
urgent need for fundamental changes in attitudes, behaviors, partnerships, and patterns
of production and consumption. The recommendations also focused on the
importance of addressing the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of
the development in an integrated way that allows for the adoption of green
economy policies and procedures to include the financial policy, the green and
industrial policies, the green work policies, and the trade policies, and the
importance of engaging the knowledge and education institutions in the
international efforts to achieve the green economy, and engaging the decision-makers
in the government, the parliaments, the local and private sectors, and the
different segments of society.
Coinciding with the
conference, the “UAE Green Festival” will be concluded today Wednesday, which came
to emphasize the leading role of UAE in achieving a healthy environment free
from all kinds of pollution and climate deterioration, and that reflects its
civilizational mission in sustainable development in line with the “UAE Vision
2021” to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment,
and provide opportunities for the authorities, governmental departments,
companies, and private institutions to promote their environment initiatives,
and implement them on the ground, in order to establish a sustainable green
economy.
The festival took started
on (16/3/2014) at “Khalidiya Park” in “Abu Dhabi”, and it included a variety of
initiatives, exhibitions, and conferences in the different Emirates of the
State, and the educational institutions participated in the festival through
awareness programs for the their students about the ways to preserve the
environment, and the best eco-friendly practices. The students also
participated in many environmental activities, such as tree planting and
clean-up campaigns, and the educational institutions organized seminars and
awareness workshops about how to preserve the environment.
