
Under the auspices
of His Excellency Dr. Nabil El Araby, Secretary General of the Arab League and
His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Energy of Egypt,
the Arab Forum on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency is held on the 18-19 of
June 2014, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
(UN-ESCWA), the Regional Center for Renewable Energy
and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) and the Project Energy Efficiency in the
Construction Sector in the Mediterranean (MED-ENEC).
The Forum seeks to
develop a vision on the role that can be played by small and medium-sized
enterprises in sustainable energy development in the Arab region, and the technical,
institutional, financial and legislative tools that could encourage these enterprises
to invest in this area, by providing a platform for dialogue between the
various stakeholders, including
policy makers, international and regional experts in sustainable energy and
green economy, small and medium-sized enterprises, professional associations,
suppliers of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency, financial
institutions, and others. And exchange of experience in the relevant areas,
identify possible cooperation partnerships, so that the subject of securing
energy supply from renewable and non-renewable resources is a priority and a
key driver of sustainable development for all Arab countries, as a strategic
option for poverty eradication and improving access to education, water, food
and health services, in
addition to creating jobs for young people in the sectors of renewable energy
and energy efficiency, because the Arab region needs to create more than 50
million jobs by 2020 to the educated youth.
The objective of the
Forum is to exchange expertise in the relevant areas, and to identify potential
cooperation partnerships come attention to small and medium-sized enterprises
as an important means of creating employment and promoting entrepreneurship
among young Arabs, where you find these institutions a unique opportunity to
take advantage of available resources and attracting potential investments from
the private sector to develop and strengthen renewable energy and energy
efficiency markets.
The Forum will
discuss several topics, including the role of small and medium-sized
enterprises in the transformation of energy in the Arab region through national
and regional cooperation activities, and the legislative and institutional
frameworks necessary to activate the role of those organizations in the
dissemination of renewable energy and its efficiency for sustainable development,
it also discusses the role of technology
for rural development in the Arab region, the potentials and the challenges
facing these institutions to play their role, particularly in rural areas,
including the prospects for job creation and contribution to research and
development of green technologies, the Forum also presents the potential funding structures of small
and medium-sized enterprises to implement the programs and activities of the
renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Arab region, and success stories
and lessons learned, and
examples of the experiences of some of those institutions operating in various
fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Arab region, and examples
of professional associations and networks to support small and medium-sized
enterprises working in the field of green technologies, with a particular focus
on energy service companies.
