The “World Health
Organization”, which is affiliated to the “United Nations Organization”, is commemorating
the “World Cancer Day” on the (4th) of February focusing on Target Five
of the “World Cancer Declaration”: “Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer”,
under the tagline “Debunk the myths”.
The “World Cancer
Day” is an annual event organized by the “International Union Against Cancer”,
which launched a motto “I love my healthy active childhood” as a continuation
of the motto “Today’s Children, Tomorrow’s World”, due to the high rates of
inactivity, overweight, and consuming unhealthy foods by adults and children
around the world, and to raise the world’s awareness of the risks of “cancer”
through protection and early detection of cancer and treatment methods, as this
disease is considered one of the biggest health problems facing the world, and
one of the main causes of death in the world.
The “World Health Organization” pointed out on its website that this
disease caused the death of (6,7) million people in (2005), and it will claim
the lives of another (84) million people during the period between (2005-2015) if
no actions are taken to prevent it. The Organization sees that it is possible
to be prevent (40%) of cancer cases through the provision of the necessary
healthy environment.
The “UAE” has paid great importance to reducing the numbers of people
with cancer, and adopted several initiatives such as : the “Pink Caravan”, the
first initiative of “Kashf” program that aims to provide methods and mechanisms
of early detection of cancers such as “breast,
cervix , prostate, skin, colon, and rectum” cancers, to raise awareness
about “breast cancer”, to provide a mechanism to detect the disease, and to
develop the first unified tumor record
in the state, in addition to collecting enough donations for purchasing and
operating a portable “Mammogram” clinic, which is equipped with the latest
technologies for early detection of “breast cancer” for free. Such a clinic is
leading a big campaign to raise awareness of the importance of early detection
and protection against “breast cancer”, which covers the seven States of the Emirates
including distant areas and the suburbs.
The “Halifax Project” is considered the first global initiative which
involves the cooperation of the best (350) cancer researchers from prominent
research institutions in (31) countries around the world. It aims to continue
to develop a model of comprehensive cure with less toxic and more innovative
treatment to reach the ultimate goal of eliminating cancer. It was a pride that
two faculty members of the “UAE University” were chosen last year to take part
in this important international project.
“Abu Dhabi” is hosting the (19th)
edition of “Terry Fox Run”, the most prominent charitable event, where the
biggest amounts of donations in the world are collected in one day, it has
collected around (15) million Dirhams since its first edition in (1995), and (42)
projects have been financed for cancer research in various universities,
institution, and hospitals in the “UAE” in cooperation with the “College of
Medicine and Health Sciences” at “UAE University” in “Al Ain”.
