UAE promotes scientific research to preserve the ozone layer

Page Content

The "International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer" is marked on the 16th of September each year, which is the day on which more than 190 countries signed the Montreal Protocol 1987, which sets the procedures to be followed on the global, regional and local levels, in order to preserve the layer ozone, and phase out the substances that deplete it.

The UAE is celebrating the "2014 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer ", under the theme "Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission Goes On”, with the aim of phasing out the substances that deplete the ozone layer.

Given the responsibility of the leadership towards this issue, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has recently issued a resolution on the national system for the substances that deplete the ozone layer, which includes an appendix of materials, equipment, and products that deplete the ozone layer to be under surveillance, and it also includes another appendix of a table for the total elimination of substances under surveillance, and equipment, devices, and products that deplete the ozone Layer.

The UAE, through the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and many institutions involved, stressed on the need for paying attention to the promotion of scientific research, and accelerate the efforts to find techniques and applicable practical solutions in this field, through research grants to fund the scientific visits for the faculty members, funding of the research of graduate students, and prizes for researchers and innovators, in addition to holding and participating in workshops , scientific seminars, and volunteer days, and in other regional and international forums.

Therefore, the Scientific Research Department of the Ministry has recently held a meeting with the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, and a representative of the research team from the American University of Sharjah, who is handling the project of monitoring and analyzing the concentration of ozone in the atmospheric layers using the recycling model in the State, which is funded by the ministry.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon pointed out, on the occasion of "International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer",  that since a quarter of a century and more, the world has united its efforts to reverse the depletion of the ozone layer that protects the Earth from harmful radiation emitted from space, and the ozone layer is now on its way to recover during the next few decades, and it is widely believed that the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is one of the most successful environmental treaties in history, as it puts legally binding controls governing the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances at the national level, and has the approval of 197 countries in the world.
