The UAE is
participating in the World Pneumonia Day which falls on November 12, 2014,
under the organization of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global
Coalition Against Child Pneumonia for the sixth time, under the them: “Universal access to pneumonia prevention
and care”. It aims to take prompt
action to fight the disease that claims the lives of human beings each year,
Pneumonia is the
leading cause of death among children worldwide, described by the World Health
Organization as the forgotten killer of children, this disease affects children
and their families in all regions of the world, it spreads primarily in South Asia and
sub-Saharan Africa, and can be avoided by simple interventions, treatment with
medication and health care that does not cost a lot, 192 United Nations Member States and at
least 23 international organizations to achieve the Millennium Development
Goals by 2015 and 8 international development goals.
The fourth goal is
to reduce the number of deaths of children under five by two thirds between
1990 and 2015, and to work to reduce the proportion of deaths due to pneumonia
if the world wants to achieve the fourth development goal of the Millennium.
According to (WTO)
statistics, this disease kills each year, about 1.1 million children under
five, accounting for 18% of deaths recorded among that group throughout the
vaccinations against pneumococcal disease are essential , and could prevent
humans more than (90%) of diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria for pulmonary
infections. So the pneumococcal vaccination was incorporated in the national
immunization program in the UAE since 2007.
The Global Coalition
Against Child Pneumonia was established in 2009 to raise awareness of mortality
due to pneumonia and to advocate global action to prevent this disease and the
Coalition along with the World Health Organization then set the World Pneumonia
Day on November 12th of every year.
