The “Emirates Thalassemia Society” honored the “Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research” in recognition of its contribution and participation in spreading health and cultural awareness about “Thalassemia” in the UAE, especially among university and college students, in a ceremony held by the “Emirates Thalassemia Society”, under the patronage of her Highness Sheikha “Sheikha Bint Saif Al Nahyan”, Chairperson of the Society, on Monday (28th ) of April, at the “Dubai World Trade Centre”, where “Fatma AL Mohanadi”, Director of the “Government Communication Department” of the Ministry, received a plaque.

The ceremony was organized to honor the winning schools, and for the participation in “What is Thalassemia 2013” competition, held in cooperation between the Society and the “Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research”, the “Ministry of Education”, and “Abu Dhabi Education Council”. The competition was launched at government and private schools and universities in the State in order to spread the health and cultural awareness about “Thalassemia” in the various educational institutions, and encourage students, their parents, and the community to participate with the Society in setting the programs and plans that raise awareness about the disease and prevent it from spreading, in addition to encouraging the youth to undergo the medical checkup before marriage, as the “Government Communication Department” of the Ministry spread the “What is Thalassemia” competition among the various government and private higher education institutions, which are licensed by the Ministry, in continuation of the cooperation between the Society and the Ministry since (2009), and to raise awareness of this disease and spread the activities of the Society. The Department also supported the Society’s project “Largest Drop Made by People”, which urged community members to donate blood, by addressing all institutions and bodies to support and spread awareness about it on the website and social media pages of the Ministry.

It is worth mentioning that the “Emirates Thalassemia Society” was established on the (10th) of October (1997) with the aim to help people with the genetic disease “Thalassemia” morally and socially, provide them with advice, and communicate with similar international institutions and societies to exchange information and expertise, and support and follow up on the medical and treatment research related to “Thalassemia”.
