The recently concluded regional workshop on "Development of performance indicators for institutions of science and science parks in the Mena countries”, held in El-Ghazala, Tunisia, on the 25th and 26th of May 2015, organized by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Marseille Centre for Mediterranean Integration (CMI), the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), and experts representing authorities, organizations and centers from nine Arab countries: (Tunisia, Jordan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Libya), and five foreign countries: (Luxembourg, Sweden, Turkey, France, Italy).
Participants recommended the need to join efforts and promotion of Arab efforts to assist North Africa and the Middle East countries to measure institutional performance and consider the possibilities, particularly human resources, infrastructure and information technology, in an effort to improve its performance according to the studies and programs in this area, and to reduce the gap between applied curricula and scientific research in universities and economic institutions. As well as the concentration of Arab efforts of design and development of unified Arab indicators to measure the performance of scientific institutions in North Africa and Middle East, and the need to encourage the technological poles and business incubators in North Africa and the Middle East countries to adopt common indicators of science and technology in economic and social fields in order to create policies to establish Arab knowledge-based societies.
