Under the patronage of his Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Qatar University in partnership with “Quacquarelli Symonds” (QS), a leading international ranking institution, will host the fifth QS-MAPLE (Middle East and North Africa Professional Leaders in Education) Conference from 5-7 May 2015, under the theme “International Innovation and Co-operation in Higher Education”. Professor Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, Qatar University President, said “Qatar University is pleased to partner with “QS” in the forum to continue the dialogue with university leaders in the Middle East, North Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions on the opportunities and challenges in the development of the Middle Eastern higher education sector. This conference will also give universities in the region the opportunity to foster links and promote higher education and research in line with the respective national priorities. She added “We look forward to the positive outcomes and recommendations that will emanate from these discussions, and which will contribute to sustainable approaches in advancing higher education in the region”. Mandy Mok, “QS” Asia CEO, said “The Middle Eastern higher education has made great strides towards world-class status; and for the past few years we have been witnessing globalization efforts throughout the region, especially in Qatar, through active engagement in improving higher education quality by increasing investment and forging more partnerships, we appreciate the efforts of the Qatar University and its hosting this Conference, for the good of the region.” QU vice president and chief academic officer Dr Mazen Hasna said the event also highlights the importance of university collaborations, to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges that impact the higher education sector in the Mena and Asia regions. Presidents of a number of universities from countries around the world are expected to attend the event, that will feature a series of discussions on the opportunities, challenges and driving forces that have an impact on the development of higher education, as well as plenary, breakout sessions, and squared debates on topics and issues related to internationalization of higher education in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the fast emerging globalization of Middle Eastern higher education.
