The “Fatima College
of Health Sciences” recently signed an international agreement with "Skåne Care"
in “Sweden” to offer advanced postgraduate training in diabetes, effective
January 2014 at the campuses of the college in “Abu Dhabi” and “Al Ain”.
This came to
coincide with the events of "World Diabetes Day", which is the
international day to raise awareness of the risks of diabetes, celebrated on 14th
of November each year, to commemorate the birthday of “Frederick Banting” who along
with “Charles Best " collaborated in the discovery of insulin in 1922, which
is essential for the survival of many patients with diabetes.
The “International
Diabetes Federation”, offers a strong global voice for patients with diabetes,
one of the most dramatic manifestations of global support was lighting more
than (900) buildings and monuments in (84) countries in blue to mark the “World
Diabetes Day” in 2010.
The campaign against
"Diabetes" for the years 2009-2013, focused on topics of prevention
and education, with the continuing epidemic spread of diabetes in the region,
medical staff, teachers and parents have more of a focus on increasing
awareness of the disease and its prevention, "UAE" banned unhealthy
foods in schools and began to implement programs that help to increase healthy
eating habits for students and parents alike, with the emergence of new data on
effect of lifestyle in the occurrence of
diabetes.
Through the
collective efforts at the State level to reduce the social and economic impact
of diabetes, "Emirates" had successfully retreated from second to tenth
place on the list of States with the highest prevalence of diabetes.
