The first “World
Green Economy Summit 2014” was concluded lately in “Dubai”, and brought
together government officials and the business community in order to hold
international partnerships, and shape a sustainable future for the people of
the world, with the participation of the most prestigious international institutions
interested in the green economy.
The Emirate of
“Dubai” is looking forward to enhancing its presence and position as a capital
of the world green economy, in line with the “UAE Vision 2021”, through a
strategic plan to promote the investments and green partnerships, and establish
a global market for the products, technologies, and green services. This
Emirati and global interest in the green economy is considered one of the major
mechanisms to implement the millennium goals of the “United Nations for Sustainable
Development”, as the “United Nations (UN)” focuses, in celebration of the
“International Mother Earth Day”, which falls on the (22nd) of April
each year, on the theme “Green Cities”, and mobilizing millions of people to
create a sustainable, healthy environment by greening communities worldwide.
The letter of the “UN”,
which was directed to the world this year, included that “more than half of the
world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the
effects of climate change worsen, our cities have to evolve. It is time for us
to invest in efficiency and renewable energy, rebuild our cities and towns, and
begin to solve the climate crisis, and over the next two years, with focus on
“Earth Day 2014”, the “Green Cities” campaign will mobilize a global movement
to accelerate this transition”.
The “IMS/7
International Conference on Advances in Engineering Materials” announced that “UAE” possesses the largest
number of green buildings of about (525) buildings, and the conference, which
was hosted by the “American University of Sharjah” and sponsored by “Sharjah
Academy for Scientific Research”, presented a seminar for practitioners of the
construction industry from more than (20) countries, in order to address the
issues of sustainability, in an effort to link the specialized universities and
academics, and those interested in architecture in the “UAE” and the region.
The College of “Humanities and Social Sciences” of the “UAE University”
organized the “Sustainable City Exhibition”, which included (30) research
projects that handled different planning issues for the green and sustainable
cities, and a set of posters for green and sustainable environment applications
and urban planning.
The “Ministry of
Higher Education and Scientific Research” seeks to supply the State’s various
sectors with the educational infrastructure of majors related to the different
scientific degrees, and it has recently accredited the “MSc in Sustainable
Critical Infrastructure” program at “Masdar Institute of Science and Technology”,
in order to provide an academic approach about the issues of planning and
development of integrated sustainable infrastructure, with focus on the urban
planning and transportation systems sectors.
