The UAE and the
world are celebrating the World Blood Donor Day, whose slogan for this year is:
Safe blood for saving mothers on Saturday, 14th of June, 2014, which aims to raise awareness
about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all
countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.
The World Health
Organization (WHO) in 2003 classified the UAE as one of the best five countries
in the world, and the first in the Middle East in the field of blood transfusion
services. Such services at the Ministry of Health support the organizations’
programs and blood donation, and the Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research
Center at the Ministry of Health was chosen by the WHO as a regional
collaborative center for training and research in the field of Transfusion Medicine
for eight consecutive years 2008-2016. The report of the computer systems of
the Blood Transfusion and Research Center of the Ministry of Health showed that
UAE citizens make up the highest percentage of blood donors from 96 nationalities
registered in the data of the blood donation center, which reflects the humane
side and love of volunteering and doing good in UAE citizens who make up 21% of
the total blood donors in the State.
The Ministry of
Higher Education and Scientific Research participates with all Ministries and institutions
of the State in the organization of the blood donation campaigns every year,
through collecting blood units from the employees of the Ministry, posting
awareness messages on its website and social media platforms, and distributing
posters, in implementation of its strategy which aims to highlight its social
role, as blood donation is a humane and noble act that contributes in saving
the life of thousand patients who need blood transfusion, such as people who
are exposed to dangerous accidents and consequently lose a large amount of
blood, those who suffer from malignant or incurable diseases, or patients with Thalassemia,
and such donations receive overwhelming response from the employees and
customers of the Ministry as a result of the efforts exerted by the Government
Communication Department before the date of implementing the campaign to spread
the culture of blood donation.
The Ministry participated
in supporting the Emirates Thalassemia Society’s initiative in October of last
year, which aimed to register a new world record in – Guinness Book of Records–
for the largest drop of human blood in the world, and such directive comes to
spread awareness about the disease and support those afflicted in the State.
The Ministry always
emphasizes that the blood donation campaign is the biggest evidence of giving
and humanity, and it values and encourages universities and academic
institutions that work on spreading the culture of voluntary blood donation
among its students, employees, and the civil society, through which donors will
send a message that expresses their love
for giving and good, since many of the patients in State hospitals and health
centers need to save their lives daily, and are in dire need of every drop of
blood.
