The “International
Women’s Day” is on the (8th) of March each year, in which the globe
celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women, and in
some countries such as “Palestine” since (8th of March 2011), “China”, “Russia”, and “Cuba”,
women receive awards on this day.
The celebration of
this occasion came after the first “Women's International Democratic Federation
Congress” which was held in “Paris” in (1945), even though some researchers more
likely believe that “International Women’s Day” came after women strikes which
took place in “USA”.
In the UAE, the
Emirati woman has been able to receive several leadership positions in the
State on various levels, and she works along with men in all government and
private institutions, where she demonstrated a significant presence and good
performance, which is no different from men’s performance. In the new
government formation, which was adopted by HisHighness Sheikh “Khalifa Bin
Zayed Al Nahyan”, the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh “Mohammed Bin
Rashid Al Maktoum”, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of “Dubai”,
announced that it contained four female ministers.
His Excellency
Sheikh “Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan”, Minister of Higher Education and
Scientific Research, requested to provide suitable scholarships for women, and to
encourage them by the academic supervisors. According to the Director General
of the “National Bureau Statistics” and its statistical data, women comprise (32.4%)
of the total number of the population in the State, whereas Emirati women
comprise about (49%) of the total number of Emiratis. The UAE is considered
among the few countries where literate women outnumbered literate men, in the
age group (15-24), in the academic year (2010-2011). A report by the “World
Economic Forum 2012” indicated that the percentage of women attending higher
education institutes in the UAE was
higher than that of men, and that the UAE was ranked first in the world for the
scientific achievement of women among (135) countries. As for the role of women
in education, the statistics of the report indicate that the percentage of
primary education teachers is (86%), and secondary education (65%), while the
percentage declines to (31%) in higher education, and that is consistent with the
view of “Irina Bokova”, Director General of (UNESCO), when she said that she
firmly believes that the empowerment of women is the pathway to a world full of
peace and justice. Assistant Secretary General of the “United Nations” and
Deputy Executive Director of “UN Women” said that Emirati women occupy
prestigious and significant places in the Emirati community, and that was
during her visit to the “General Women’s Union” in “Abu Dhabi” late last year.
In appreciation for
the Emirati women, and to enhance the initiative spirit in them, special
meetings on this occasion are held in the State, and “International Women’s
Day” has become a traditional date for celebration and reviewing the achievements
of Emirati women each year, in line with their important status in the Emirati
community. It is an important occasion that is worth appreciation and care, and
should be utilized in serving the women’s sectors and families, and to ensure
the effective role of women in the community.
