The Ministry of Higher
Education and Scientific Research commenced with the preparations for
implementing the plan set by the Government Communication Department, in order
to implement “Gasso Alay” campaign, which was launched by the Ministry of
Interior in order to raise awareness about the risks and harms of drugs, so as
to avoid falling into the ambush of addiction, protect against deadly poisons,
and protect the youth against this plague. This coincides with the
International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is marked
on 26th of June each year.
The International
Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking aims to raise the social
awareness about the risks of drugs and their healthy, psychological, social,
and economic impacts, focus on the relationship between drug addiction and
health deterioration, raise the awareness of society about the risks of drug
trafficking and its negative impacts on society, activate cooperation between
the responsible organizations for the purpose of combating drug abuse and
trafficking, and mobilize support to encourage fighting against drugs in the
society in the various sectors of the State.
The Ministry’s
participation in the implementation of the plan for “Gasso Alay” campaign
related to combating drugs is to consolidate the wise leadership approach on
the necessity to provide the means of welfare to all citizens and residents,
and promote the quality of life for the Emirati community, so the Ministry
began with addressing the universities to raise the awareness of students about
the subject, and it will hold orientation workshops at the universities, and
display awareness materials on the campaign on the Ministry’s website, the
social networking pages, employees’ email, and the cultural attachés abroad.
At the UAE level, the
10th International Hemaya Forum has been held recently in order to
discuss the issues of drugs under the theme- The International Standards for
the Development of National and Regional Strategies for Drug Prevention-, with
the participation of 24 countries, an in cooperation with the United Nations.
The Forum was organized by Dubai Police as part of the International Day
Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking events, and aims to find a unified
Arab strategy to protect against drugs. The Forum was accompanied by an
exhibition that witnessed an outstanding participation of students from
universities and schools, with the purpose of bringing together the students
and drug- fighting experts so as to get the students acquainted with their way
of thinking in the awareness process, in addition to the means they like, such
as the social media communication, fine arts, and others.
The UAE is also
participating in the 25th Arab Conference for Arab drug control
officials currently held in Tunisia, in order to discuss a set of issues
related to the advancement of combating drug and improvement of the Arab
strategy to combat the illicit use of drugs and psychotropic substances, in addition
to drug trafficking.
