The “Ministry of
Higher Education and Scientific Research” participated in the new session of
the annual “Dubai Customs Award of Intellectual Property Rights” for
governmental and private schools, universities, and colleges in the State for
the academic year (2013-2014), which was launched by “Dubai Customs”, in
cooperation with “The Ministry of Education” and “Knowledge and Human
Development Authority” in “Dubai”.
Mr. “Yousef Al
Hashmi”, Director of the” Intellectual Property Rights Department” at “ Dubai
Customs” said that the award has been launched for schools and universities in
order for contestants to compete for the award, ensuring its role in raising
awareness of “Intellectual Property” rights to mainstream this culture among
the rising generations to enable the largest possible segment of society to
stand up to hacking, imitation, and commercial fraud, noting that the world has
devoted an international day to celebrate “ World Intellectual Property Day”
which was endorsed by the member states of the “World Intellectual Property Organization” (WIPO)
in the year (2000), choosing the (26th)
of April as the date when the agreement of establishing (WIPO) came into effect
in (1970).
“Al Hashmi” pointed
out that the department was keen on following up on the projects developed for
the award, encouraging them to provide as much information about the nature of
violations of intellectual property, through holding seminars by participants in
schools and universities in the State as part of their presented projects to
obtain the award, provided that the nominee, whether from school students starting
from grade (6) to grade (12) or university students at different levels, should
prepare, organize and implement a project in the field of “Intellectual
Property”, which aims to enhance loyalty , national responsibility, and the spirit of volunteerism among
students, and to enhance the national identity, guidance and creativity in this
area, and to protect society from commercial and industrial fraud and theft of
creative ideas. This competition reflects the efforts of the department to
raise the society’s awareness about “Intellectual Property”.
The “Intellectual Property Rights Department”
at “Dubai Customs” is considered the leading department in the “Middle East”.
It was established in (2005) as an independent administrative unit to keep up
with the State’s policy, and in implementation of the international agreements
and treaties to which the UAE is committed, and to confirm its desire to protect
the “rights of intellectual and industrial property”, and to protect consumers
from all kinds of fraud and exploitation which aim at a quick profit with total
disregard to human health and security.
