The UAE has
recently become a member of the International Steering Committee on UNESCO's Sustainable
Development Goal 4 (SDG4), UNESCO's 2030 Education. This comes as a culmination
of the support and efforts of the leadership to promote the UAE presence in
international arenas concerned with education, innovation, culture and human
development.
The Steering
Committee is composed of 38 members representing a majority from Member States,
in addition to international agencies, institutions and organizations in the
area of education and development such as the UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, UNHCR, UN
Women, ILO, the Global Partnership for Education, the OECD, regional
organizations, teacher organizations, civil society networks, in addition to
representatives from the private sector, foundations, youth and student
organizations which represent all supply and demand parties of education
as a basic service provided by government and a fundamental human right.
His
Excellency Hussain Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said that the wise
leadership is keen to support all global efforts to develop education in
various spheres and international forums which reflects positively on the
levels of education in all societies around the world.
He added that
the UAE is working continuously with various international organizations and
bodies concerned with the education to formulate common frameworks with all
stakeholders to achieve the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 4:
Education.
He stressed
that the UAE is moving towards developing educational frameworks on the best
educational experiences and practices, and to achieve this; the UAE is
cooperating with all relevant international bodies to become an active part of
the global movement to improve the living conditions of societies through the
development of their educational systems.
The Steering
Committee is mandated to provide strategic guidance to Member States and the
education community, make recommendations for catalytic action regarding the
fourth goal in terms of policies and
strategies, advocate for adequate financing of education goals 2030, review,
monitor and prepare progress reports toward achieving the targets of the fourth
goal, in addition advocacy and communication.
The UAE is
represented in the steering committee by Mahra Al Mutaiwee, Director of the
Regional Center for Educational Planning, a UNESCO center from the second
category hosted by the UAE since 2007 under an agreement signed by the UAE
government and UNESCO. Al Mutaiwee has experience in education planning,
management, policies and indicators in the UAE as well as her experience in the
same field in the GCC and Arab countries given the mandate of the Center and
its partnerships on the Gulf, Arab and international levels.
