The Commission for Academic Accreditation Commission at the Ministry of Education is conducting the first workshop of the fifth cycle of the Certified Reviewer Project at the University of Sharjah from February 21 to 23. This project is done within in the CAA strategic framework of building competencies of academics in the UAE. The CAA focuses on increasing familiarity with developing the CAA 2019 Standards for Institutional Licensing and Program Accreditation and increasing awareness of international best quality assurance practices in institutional licensing procedures and the accreditation of academic programs.
After successfully completing a series of training sessions and passing associated assessments, participants will become Certified Reviewers who are eligible for CAA selection to serve on review teams for licensing higher education institutions and accrediting academic programs.
HE.Prof. Mohammad Yousef Bani Yas, Higher Education Adviser and Director of the Commission for Academic Accreditation, said that the 2019 licensing and accreditation standards launched by the Commission follow the best international standards, suit the academic diversity of higher education in the country, and are in line with the objectives of the Ministry of Education to enhance the quality of higher education. He also noted that this will build local capacities in the field of licensing and accreditation, and will boost the standing of UAE’s higher education system in the ranks of the global educational systems.
Dr. Baniyas stressed that the Ministry of Education supports implementing the best modern educational practices at UAE Institutions of Higher Learning. These practices enhance and build the capacities of academics and national competencies in higher education institutions in line with the state's directions and future vision. He also highlighted the responsibility of the Commission for Academic Accreditation to lead the continuing development of higher education in the country through joint cooperative work with educational institutions and to ensure that institutions embed international best practices in their internal quality assurance systems.
Senior Academic Commissioner Prof. Emad Abu Al Rub added that the aim of the Certified Reviewer Project is to build a culture of quality assurance and individual capacities within UAE’s higher education sector, which is one of the priorities of the state’s modern trends and future vision that attaches the utmost importance to invest in the human element, as he added, stressing the importance and success of this project came at the right time. During the last two years, trainees who successfully passed all stages of training were used in blended academic reviews during 2019-2021 as international review teams faced COVID-19 related travel restrictions. So far, 80 academic reviewers have been trained and qualified in the four courses the CAA conducted during the years 2020 and 2021.
