24 February 2021: The inaugural Innovation@UAE Majlis talk, featuring three noteworthy COVID-19 related research projects from accredited higher education institutes (HEIs) in the UAE, was delivered by the Ministry of Education on 22 February, as part of UAE Innovation Week.
The virtual talk was opened with a keynote from His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Al-Mualla Undersecretary for Academic Affairs of the Ministry of Education of the UAE and moderated by Dr. Hend Altair, Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Scientific Research at the Ministry of Education. Over 900members of the public attended the inaugural Innovation@UAE Majlis talk.
"Today we are launching the Innovation@UAE Majlis to coincide with Innovation Week … as one of our contributions to the activities that are happening across the UAE during this week. This talk series will feature researchers discussing timely and noteworthy in way that is non-technical and engaging… to increase public awareness of high-quality research taking place in the UAE… The talk series also seeks to showcase research to specialized audiences, exemplify quality and potential of research in the UAE universities, and encourage collaboration between universities, government, and industry," Dr. Al Mualla said in his keynote remarks.
As per the format of the virtual talk series, three researchers based at accredited UAE HEIs delivered talks on their related research projects, after which they answered questions from the audience and moderator about their projects. Dr. Rifat Hammoudi, Professor at the College of Medicine and Head of the Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics Group at the University of Sharjah, delivered a talk titled "Non-Invasive Diagnostic Test for COVID-19 from Saliva". Dr. Anoud Bani-Hani, Research Ethics Chair and Assistant Professor in the College of Technological Innovation at Zayed University, delivered a talk titled "COVID-19 Related AI-Analytics and Fake News". Ms. Anoud Abusalim,senior instructor in the Department of English at the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah, delivered a talk titled "Remote Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic".
The talk series furthers the department's mission of advancing and supporting academic research in the country by giving a platform to academic researchers leading innovative projects of relevance to the UAE. It also increases public science engagement, which contributes to scientific literacy and public participation in science. The next Innovation@UAE Majlis event will focus on space related research and will take place in March.
