The National Commission for Education, Culture and Science

 
Introducing the Commission 
The UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science was formed pursuant to the Cabinet Decree number (14) for the year 1980, under the Minister of Education. The Commission shall act as a coordinator among the different concerned governmental entities on the one hand and between the Ministry and the international, regional and local organizations in the field. The commission shall strive to reflect the rich culture of the Nation through an active participation and involvement on the international arena. 
 

Objectives

  • Contribute to a better interaction and understanding among communities to enhance cultural preservation, development and outreach based on human values. 
  • Reflect the civilized image of the UAE in the different regional and international venues.
  • Work on upgrading the levels of education, culture and communication in the country through the technical and other means of support provided by regional and international organizations, in addition to a continuous follow up and active participation in the related international developments.
 
Scope of Work 
Education: Fostering primary and higher education programs that entail sustainable development principles aiming at a full implementation of these principles on the Macro-educational policies level. Moreover, the Commission shall be responsible for upgrading the educational system, and putting forward recommendations and initiatives to enhance the progress of the educational system and to enrich the developmental process. 
 
Culture: Preserving, maintaining and managing the physical and natural heritage of the State in a manner that incorporates cultural concepts within the general developmental framework of the State, as well as developing an integrated and comprehensive educational program to facilitate and encourage the multi-cultural means of expression and dialogue. 
 
Science: Enhancing individual and corporate capabilities in the different fields of science in order to match between applied science and the needs of the community and to implement the policies set by the UNESCO for the development of science and technology and the promotion of creativity for the purposes of sustainable development and bio-diversity. 
 
Social and Humanitarian Sciences: Promoting the culture of peace and enhancing inter-cultural dialogue based on the adopted international laws in order to put in place a comprehensive framework for an ethical approach in the application of science and technology, as well as promoting the social involvement of the youth, and enhancing the role of women within the family and in the working place. Moreover, providing the proper environment for water and land resources management including renewable energy, and enhancing preparedness for catastrophes.  
 
Communication and Information: Promoting freedom of expression and accessibility to information while respecting the rights of privacy and religious symbols, and providing a media friendly environment to avoid stereotyping of women and the use of information to fulfill sustainable development objectives. 
 
International Organizations 

United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO)
UNESCO is a specialized UN agency that was found on the sixteenth of November 1945 with head quarters in Paris, aiming at the promotion of educational, scientific and cultural cooperation pursuant to the UN Charter.

The United Arab Emirates became member in the UNESCO on the twentieth of April of 1972
  • Islamic Education, Science and Culture Organization (ISESCO): 
    In 1982, the ISESCO was announced by the twenty eight member countries of the general foundation conference held in Fes, the scientific capital of Morocco.
    The United Arab Emirates became member in the ISESCO in 1982.

  • Arab League Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ALESCO):
    The Arab League Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was established as a specialized entity under the League of Arab States on 2/7/1970 with headquarters in Tunisia with a main mission of developing education, science and culture in the Arab World.
    The United Arab Emirates acceded the organization in 1972 in addition to other 22 member states.

  • Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States
    A consultative Gulf institution operating in the countries of the region in the field of education, science and culture, and contributes to the promotion of cooperation in this field and maintaining proper coordination, cooperation and standardization. The Bureau works in coordination and cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Countries Council and with respect to its Charter.
    The United Arab Emirates joined the Bureau in 1980.
